SERAPHEARLS PEARLS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
OUR PEARLS
South Sea pearls are valued for their exceptional lustre, substantial nacre, and naturally larger size compared to most other pearl varieties.
Cultivated in the pristine waters of the South Pacific, they are known for a soft, deep glow rather than an overly sharp shine - a characteristic often associated with high-quality nacre and careful cultivation.
Each pearl forms naturally over several years, resulting in subtle variations in shape, tone, and surface that make every piece unique.
South Sea pearls are exceptionally rare due to the long cultivation period, limited farming regions, and the naturally low yield of high-quality pearls.
They are cultivated in select waters of the South Pacific under highly sensitive environmental conditions, with each pearl requiring years of careful growth. Only a small proportion ultimately display the lustre, nacre quality, shape, and surface characteristics suitable for fine jewellery.
As pearl size increases, rarity becomes even more pronounced - particularly in pearls with exceptional glow and balanced proportions.
Pearl quality is determined by the balance of several characteristics, including lustre, nacre thickness, surface quality, shape, and colour.
Lustre is often regarded as the most important factor, as it reflects the depth, clarity, and life of the pearl. Pearls with strong lustre and substantial nacre typically require longer cultivation periods and highly selective harvesting conditions.
Because each pearl forms naturally over time, subtle variations are inevitable. Fine pearl grading therefore depends not on perfection alone, but on the overall harmony of the pearl.
Pearls are organic gems formed naturally within living oysters, and subtle surface characteristics are part of their individuality.
Fine South Sea pearls may display delicate growth features, pinpoints, or minor irregularities formed during the cultivation process. These natural characteristics are not considered flaws, but part of what distinguishes genuine pearls from mass-produced materials.
At Seraphearls, pearls are selected for their overall beauty, balance, lustre, and visual presence.
A pearl’s colour and overtone are influenced by a combination of oyster species, water conditions, nacre structure, and the natural environment in which the pearl develops.
South Sea pearls naturally occur in a range of tones - from luminous white and silver to deeper golden hues - often accompanied by subtle overtones such as rose, cream, or soft green.
These natural variations contribute to the individuality and character of each pearl.
South Sea pearls form gradually over an extended period within the Pinctada maxima oyster.
Depending on the farming environment, pearl size, and cultivation approach, the process may take from approximately one to several years before harvest. Longer growth periods often contribute to thicker nacre and greater depth of lustre.
At Seraphearls, we work with carefully selected farms that prioritise responsible cultivation, stable growing conditions, and overall pearl quality.
South Sea pearls and freshwater pearls are formed in different molluscs and cultivated under different environmental conditions, giving each category its own character.
At Seraphearls, we specialise primarily in South Sea pearls for their rarity, larger average size, exceptional nacre quality, and distinctive depth of lustre.
Rather than viewing pearls purely through origin or commercial grading terminology, we focus on overall quality, balance, and visual presence when selecting each pearl.
No. South Sea pearls are cultivated across several regions of the South Pacific, including Australia and Indonesia.
While origin may influence characteristics such as colour tone, size potential, and nacre development, we believe pearl quality should ultimately be assessed by the individual pearl itself.
At Seraphearls, we focus on careful selection, working with trusted farms that uphold responsible and sustainable cultivation practices.
Yes. From time to time, Seraphearls offers selected Keshi pearls as part of limited creations.
Keshi pearls are non-nucleated pearls valued for their organic forms, distinctive lustre, and unique character. Due to their naturally irregular formation, no two Keshi pearls are ever exactly alike.
Availability is limited and depends on the quality and individuality of each pearl selected.
Yes. Selected Seraphearls creations may already include independent pearl certification from recognised gemological laboratories such as GIA or GSL
For other eligible pieces, certification may also be arranged upon request prior to shipment. As certification is conducted individually through third-party laboratories, additional costs and processing time may apply.
If you would like to request certification for a particular piece, please contact us for further assistance.
Yes. South Sea pearls are cultured pearls formed within the Pinctada maxima oyster under carefully managed marine conditions.
Their formation remains a natural process that takes place gradually over time, with each pearl developing its own unique lustre, surface character, colour, and overtone.
Today, cultured pearls represent the recognised standard within the fine pearl industry, including many of the world’s most exceptional South Sea pearls.
